Prints! I Like Them Large!

I know I am probably not alone when I say I like BIG prints! The bigger the better and the tighter and sharper the image the bigger you can take that print. A large print on a wall with little satellite prints around it is a very cool look.  Also popular is the family portrait with individual prints of each family member around the main portrait.

BUT… what if you had one large print without all the little prints? One print that had 16 individual images or a sequence of images that needed to be displayed together because… well because they just do!

You have so many options when it comes to prints these days, so many cool frames and so little wall space   Why not design a print around the room it’s going to hang in? You spend months and months looking for the perfect sofa, and weeks on end looking at paint and trying to find the perfect shade why not design a print that fits the room? Why limit yourself to the traditional 10x8 or 6x4? Why not have a custom print that is 30”x30” and fits the blank spot on the wall and gives the room the perfect finishing touch?

It isn’t going to cost as much as you may think, it is highly personalized and you can design it from the photo shoot to the printing! Big prints give the viewer the ability to enjoy the subject and feel more connected to it than a smaller standard print in a standard frame.

Make your own Art! It really is a lot of fun designing a large Montage of images and once framed they last a life time!

OR…why not have a large print as a poster? We can mount your prints on foam core! They are light and easily moved from place to place and hanging them up is very easy! You really can fill a wall with personal treasures for not a whole lot of money and you can keep it current as well!

Last But Not Least! This is an 18”x18” square design which allows it to be made larger or smaller to fit the space you are looking to fill.

You can have these made up for parties or special events! A client had a collection of family photographs made into 8 posters to celebrate their parents 50th Wedding Anniversary! They looked great and the family had some really cool mementos as well.

Family Montages

I have always loved creating Montages, using images to tell a story or share a group of images in one place. Often times you may only have a place for one really great photograph on your wall, or you may have several photographs that you really love and want to share and can’t narrow it done to one photograph.

These Montages that I have created are based on being a parent having a collection of images and limited wall space. So I took a few shots from the Best family portrait shoot that Vanessa did and came up with three different Montages or Composites as some folks refer to them.

They are for the family of course but as a photographer and editor of photographic images I chose these as favorites from a series of images. I also snuck one Montage in there that might have a sentimental twist to it   Rather than embarrass myself and say which one it is I will leave it up to your imagination in the event the message didn’t make it through

We can do these for any of our clients or if you have a group of old photographs your trying to figure out something to do with them we can scan your old images and create something special just for you!

Albums Are Keepsakes!!

Wedding Albums are so much more than a picture album. They are keepsakes, a treasured reminder of a significant moment in time. A record of when your life was irrevocably changed forever! They are more than “Albums” more than just a collection of snapshots.

A Wedding Album is a keepsake from your Wedding Day! Something unlike anything else from your special day as it lives on. The cake is gone, the flowers are gone and someone else is riding in that limo!  A physical thing you can touch, hold and share.

Vanessa and I design and craft each album and they are as unique as the couple we create it for.  It is with a great deal of pride and responsibility we shoot every wedding. We are documenting our couples story, an end to being single and the beginning of a new family. The keepsake is the story telling with pictures rather than words of that all important day.  We take that role very seriously and no matter whether our couple is ordering an album or not our approach doesn’t change nor does the level of coverage our couples get. 

There are other times in our lives that are just as important. Births, Renewal of vows or commitments, Christening and Blessing ceremonies or any moment really, as everyday is special as it only ever happens once.

We feel those special times deserve keepsakes as well.  We also know that during this economic climate that every penny is important so we are prepared to do more than just talk about it!

Retouching Portraits Continued

Yesterday I posted the Portrait retouching that we do and have available for our clients. I said at the end of that post that I would post examples of more advanced editing. So as I have some time today I thought I would go ahead and get that post up.

I enjoy working in Photoshop almost as much as I like taking the photograph! One thing I have learned though is if your not starting with a great base image your not really going to be able to go very far and you won’t be able to get away with very much if your trying to hide something.

There are two types of retouching (in my opinion),  one to repair and one to enhance.

The retouching that is done to repair is done to try and make a photograph that has issues appear as if it doesn’t. Getting the exposure as close to dead on is one of the most important things in making for a great image. Sounds simple enough but in a mixed light setting if you are using flash, a slow shutter speed might let in too much ambient light. Even though the metering appears to be correct it isn’t.

The enhancing retouch is one that allows us to bring out the depth of an image, lets us create and build on the image that we see in our minds but the camera can’t possibly capture. It is art. There are some extremely creative artist out there that use a camera to express themselves rather than a paint brush, a pencil or charcoal or clay.

A lot of photographers hold that an image is either meant to be in Color or in B&W not both. The way I like to get to the B&W is to work the color image until I am happy with it and then make the decision on converting it to B&W or leaving it in color. I feel like I get the most out of the image that way.

Retouching Portraits

Retouching Photographs these days isn’t that much different from the days of film. We took a roll of film dropped it in our cameras, be it the 110 instamatic or the 35 mm SLR and once it was shot, it was sent off to the lab to be processed. Some photographers processed their own photographs in their own dark rooms but certainly not a majority of photographers.

Today photographs are processed by the photographer more than labs. Just about every point and shoot camera comes with a software application to process the images. There are plenty of freeware applications to edit your images with as well.

The photographer has at his or her disposal a myriad of tools to help correct color cast, brightness and contrast issues and some times even focus. Each application has it’s own strengths and weaknesses and there isn’t just one tool in the box these days. Most professional photographers have a few programs that they use for different parts of their work flow.

One thing has not changed however… It takes time, knowledge and skill and the right tools.

At Foreverly Photography I typically edit all the images. I download and process just about every image file that Foreverly Photography takes. We have at our disposal some very nice tools and I have spent a great deal of time learning how to process our images to give our clients the very best image possible.

We do everything from Black & White conversions to  Cross Processing here. Vanessa has some great ideas when it comes to images and how she wants them to look. I have ideas as well but when it comes to the higher end processing we are guided by the image itself.

The basic corrections applied to all our images are color correction, minor blemish removal and conversion to a format our clients can print. This is all a part of our basic work flow. On our portrait shoots we try to include edits that are above and beyond the basics. Not just Black & White but some processed in a more dramatic fashion.

We offer retouching on all of our work. We offer retouching on digital images as well as film images.

Additionally we offer digital processing from start to finish for the amateur as well as professional photographers and everyone in between! Anything from one image to a whole disc.

So just to give you the idea of what our advanced retouching involves I am going to share a few examples of portrait work only. The high end stuff we do for our brides and portrait clients will be shared with you at a later date.

After The Rain

I like to find things in the world that everyone can see and try to show folks how I see it and what about it I find interesting. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t but I really enjoy trying to communicate what I see with pictures.

Some of these projects have turned into Art and are hanging on clients walls and some are hanging on our walls. This aspect of Foreverly Photography is one both Vanessa and I really enjoy as it is usually a quiet exploration of the visual world around us.
